XAT Syllabus 2027: Section-Wise Topics

1. Verbal & Logical Ability (VALR): 26 Questions

This section combines English language skills with logical reasoning. Reading comprehension carries much of the weight.

AreaKey topics
Reading comprehensionPassages on business, society, philosophy, literature and science, with inference, tone and main-idea questions
Para-based questionsPara jumbles, para summary, odd sentence out
Grammar and usageSentence correction, error spotting, fill in the blanks, word usage
VocabularySynonyms, antonyms, idioms, contextual meaning
Critical reasoningStrengthen/weaken arguments, assumptions, conclusions
Logical reasoningArrangements, puzzles, blood relations, syllogisms, Venn diagrams, conditional logic

2. Decision Making (DM): 21 Questions

Decision Making is the section that sets XAT apart from other MBA entrance exams. You read short cases and choose the best course of action, which is not always a single clearly correct answer.

AreaWhat to expect
Ethical dilemmasBusiness or social situations with competing values
Stakeholder analysisWeighing the impact of a decision on employees, customers, management and society
CaseletsOrganisational problems in HR, operations, marketing or finance
Analytical decision-makingConditions-based selection, ranking and elimination problems

You can’t finish this section by solving rules mechanically. You need to build judgement, which takes steady practice with cases.

3. Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation (QA & DI): 28 Questions

This is the largest section in the paper. Its difficulty ranges from moderate to tough, so accuracy matters as much as speed.

AreaKey topics
ArithmeticPercentages, profit and loss, ratio and proportion, interest, time-speed-distance, time and work, mixtures
AlgebraLinear and quadratic equations, inequalities, functions, logarithms, surds and indices, progressions
Geometry & mensurationTriangles, circles, polygons, coordinate geometry, 2D and 3D mensuration
Number systemDivisibility, remainders, factors, HCF and LCM
Modern mathsPermutation and combination, probability, set theory, binomial theorem
Data interpretationTables, bar graphs, line graphs, pie charts, caselets, mixed-format sets

4. General Knowledge (GK): 20 Questions

GK is a separate 10-minute part with no negative marking. It is not counted in the XAT percentile, but XLRI and some XAMI institutes may consider it in later selection stages. Check each institute’s admission policy.

ComponentQuestionsTopics
Current affairs12Business and economy news, government policies, awards, sports, international events, science and technology
Static GK8History, geography, polity, books and authors, important organisations

Changes in the XAT 2027 Syllabus

The topic list is broadly consistent with the previous year. The pattern still carries the major changes introduced earlier:

  • The total number of questions was reduced from 101 to 95.
  • Essay writing was removed from the paper.
  • The GK section was cut to 20 questions and moved to its own 10-minute part.
