XLRI Admission Process 2027: Step-by-Step Guide for MBA Aspirants

We checked every date, fee and step below against XLRI’s official admission pages and the XAT 2027 portal on 12 October 2026.

Taking XAT does not make you an XLRI applicant. You also have to choose XLRI’s programmes on your form, and XLRI allows almost no edits once you submit it.

If you searched for the XLRI admission process 2027, here is the short version. Register on the XAT portal by 6 December 2026, select the XLRI programmes you want, and take XAT on 3 January 2027. XLRI shortlists candidates at the end of January, interviews BM and HRM candidates between mid-February and March, and releases offers and the waitlist in April 2027. Classes start in mid-June 2027. This guide walks you through each step and flags the details XLRI itself warns about.

Who Can Apply: Eligibility Check

XLRI, founded in 1949, ranked 10th in Management in the NIRF 2025 rankings that the Ministry of Education released on 4 September 2025. It awards a PGDM, a diploma that the AICTE regulates. Before you start the form, check these points:

  • You need a recognised bachelor’s degree of at least three years in any discipline.
  • Final-year students can apply if they finish their final exams by 11 June 2027.
  • Indian candidates must take XAT 2027 for PGDM (BM) and PGDM (HRM). NRI, foreign, OCI and PIO candidates can apply through GMAT.
  • PGDM (BM) has no mandatory work-experience requirement, so freshers can apply.

XLRI counts only full-time work experience after graduation. Internships, articleships and jobs from before graduation do not count.

Step-by-Step: How to Apply to XLRI for 2027

Step 1: Create your account on the XAT portal

Go to the XAT 2027 registration page and register. The portal sends a verification link to your email, and your login details arrive after you click it. If nothing arrives, check your spam folder first. XLRI warns that company or official email addresses can block these messages, so use a personal email address that you will keep for months.

Step 2: Fill in the application form

Spend your time here, because mistakes cost the most at this stage.

  • Names: Spell your name and your parents’ names exactly as they appear on your certificates, mark sheets and ID. XLRI says any mismatch may disqualify you.
  • Marks: Final-year students enter the aggregate marks up to the last completed semester or year. Candidates from CBSE or SSC boards calculate the aggregate on all subjects, not the best five.
  • Work experience: Enter your job type as structured, unstructured or self-employed. If you receive salary in cash but hold a valid experience certificate, XLRI tells you to choose unstructured.

Use the Save and Next button as often as you like. The portal saves each stage, so you can log in later and continue.

Step 3: Select your XLRI programmes

This is the step that catches people out. XLRI states that registering for XAT does not make you eligible for XLRI automatically. You must apply separately for each XLRI programme you want.

  • Each XLRI programme costs ₹200 on top of the XAT fee.
  • If you pick PGDM (BM), XLRI considers you for both the Jamshedpur and Delhi campuses at no extra fee.
  • If you want an international specialisation track within PGDM (BM), tick the box on the form and rank the tracks you prefer.

XLRI has confirmed six tracks for the 2027-29 batch: Healthcare Analytics & Intelligence at Rutgers, Project Management, International Business, Business Analytics and Sports Management at George Washington Business School, and Marketing (STEM) at Syracuse’s Whitman School. XLRI says it may add more and plans to share the final list and booklet by mid-November. The tracks need a four-year bachelor’s degree (10+2+4). Even if you rank several tracks, you face one interview.

Step 4: Choose test cities, upload files and pay

Pick up to six preferred test cities, ideally close to home. XLRI makes the final allotment, so you may not get your first choice. Then upload a recent passport-size colour photo and a signature that you signed in black ink on white paper, saved as a JPG, JPEG or PNG file.

Preview the whole form before you submit it. XLRI states that you cannot edit your details once you submit the form after payment. The fee is ₹2,300 for XAT plus ₹200 for each XLRI programme. You can pay by debit card, credit card, net banking, IMPS or wallet.

After you pay, wait for the confirmation. Do not press back or refresh, because that can cause a double payment. A successful payment generates an e-receipt, and no e-receipt means the payment failed. Print the application form and the receipt, and keep a digital copy too.

Step 5: Download your admit card and take XAT

XLRI plans to release admit cards from 20 December 2026 (tentative). XAT 2027 runs on 3 January 2027 from 2:00 to 5:00 pm, and the exam lasts three hours. The interface gives you a scientific calculator, all sections stay open from the start, and XLRI sets no sectional time limits.

Sign your admit card and the attendance sheet exactly as you signed the uploaded image. XLRI says a mismatch may disqualify you. To prepare, work through XAT previous year papers, follow our XAT 2027 preparation strategy, and test yourself with CatMock mock tests.

Step 6: Check your result and shortlist

XLRI says results arrive about three weeks after the exam, which puts them in the second half of January. XLRI then shortlists candidates for interview at the end of January. To see what percentile earned calls in the past, read our XLRI cutoff trends guide.

Step 7: Complete the post-shortlist tasks

Last cycle, XLRI asked shortlisted candidates to submit a programme-specific statement of purpose and book an interview slot online. We expect a similar flow in 2027, but follow the instructions in your shortlist email and dashboard, because XLRI sets the exact tasks each year.

Step 8: Attend the XLRI interview

XLRI interviews BM and HRM candidates between mid-February and March 2027. The interview and the other selection rounds decide how XLRI ranks you.

Step 9: Handle your offer or waitlist update

XLRI lists offers and the waitlist for April 2027. If you land on the waitlist, you wait for seats that selected candidates leave open, so keep your documents ready and watch your email and dashboard.

XLRI states that admissions are purely merit-based and involve no management or NRI quota. Ignore any message that promises a seat for money.

Step 10: Accept your offer, verify your documents and join

When an offer arrives, accept it by the date on your offer letter and pay the acceptance amount. Reports from the last cycle say XLRI adjusts this amount against the first-year fee and asks selected candidates to complete document verification. Confirm both points in your own offer letter, because candidates who miss the payment deadline can lose the seat. Classes begin in mid-June 2027.

Mistakes That Can Cost You a Seat

  • Skipping the XLRI programme selection. XAT registration alone does not apply you to XLRI.
  • Spelling errors. A name that differs from your certificates may disqualify you.
  • A mismatched signature. Your exam-day signature must match the uploaded one.
  • Submitting before you verify. XLRI allows almost no edits after you submit and pay.
  • Using a company email. It may block the portal’s messages.
  • Refreshing during payment. You risk a double payment, and no e-receipt means the payment failed.
  • Counting internships as experience. XLRI counts only full-time work after graduation.
  • Trusting quota offers. XLRI has no management or NRI quota.
