How GMAT Works for MBA Admissions in India
One-year and executive MBAs
Colleges design these for working professionals. They ask for GMAT or GRE, work experience and an interview. ISB, IIMA, IIMB and IIMC sit here.
Two-year PGDMs
A few private schools take GMAT from Indian applicants. SPJIMR, IMI Delhi and IMT Ghaziabad are examples. Many accept freshers.
NRI and international applicants
Some institutes, including MDI and several IIMs, take GMAT in this category. Rules differ by college.
Top MBA Colleges Accepting GMAT Scores in India: Fees and Placements
| Programme | Total fee | Latest reported pay |

| IIM Ahmedabad PGPX (Class of 2026) | ₹35 lakh (single housing) to ₹37.10 lakh (married housing), 2026-27, plus immersion cost | Average earning potential ₹41.48 LPA; average fixed cash ₹33.64 LPA |

All pay figures are gross CTC before tax. Fees and pay change every year.
Read pay numbers carefully. IIMA reports “maximum earning potential”, which adds bonuses and variable pay to fixed pay. That is why its headline figure runs higher than the others.
ISB PGP (Hyderabad and Mohali)
ISB is the biggest name in GMAT-based MBA admissions. The Class of 2026 received 1,117 job offers for 808 graduating students, per the ISB press release. The class’s GMAT Focus average was 669, with a range of 555 to 765.
The 2027-28 fee schedule lists tuition at ₹26.64 lakh. Meals, books, laptop and insurance cost extra.
Early in your career? ISB’s PGP YL takes applicants with up to 24 months of work experience.
IIM Ahmedabad PGPX
PGPX is IIMA’s one-year MBA for experienced professionals. Selection uses GMAT or GRE, then an interview. IIMA accepts GMAT Focus scores, but only test-centre scores, not online ones.
In the Class of 2026, 134 of the 139 students who sought placement through the institute accepted offers.
IIM Bangalore EPGP
EPGP is a one-year residential MBA. IIMB’s fee page includes an indicative ₹5.5 lakh for international immersion. In 2025-26, 61 students accepted offers.
IIMB also offers merit scholarships. Twelve top rank holders each get a ₹8 lakh tuition waiver.
IIM Calcutta MBAEx
MBAEx is IIM Calcutta’s one-year executive MBA. It selects on GMAT, a statement of purpose and an interview, and expects about five years of experience.
Many pages mix flagship MBA numbers with MBAEx. Check IIM Calcutta’s own MBAEx page for its fees and placements.
SPJIMR PGDM
SPJIMR’s PGDM is AICTE-approved, and recruiters treat it like an MBA. The 2027-29 fee is ₹24.86 lakh, covering tuition and a basic hostel room. You need a valid CAT or GMAT score, and applications close on 27 November 2026.
See the SPJIMR MBA fees guide and the SPJIMR application form guide. The official numbers sit on the SPJIMR fee page.
XLRI PGDM (GM)
XLRI’s PGDM (GM) accepts XAT, GMAT or GRE scores. Its BM and HRM programmes accept GMAT scores from eligible international applicants. Check the latest criteria on the official XLRI website.

What GMAT Score Do You Need?
GMAC’s current exam is the GMAT Focus Edition. It scores from 205 to 805 and has been the only version since 1 February 2024. Scores stay valid for five years.
ISB’s Class of 2026 gives a useful benchmark: a Focus average of 669 and a range of 555 to 765. Treat it as a guide, not a cutoff.
- Compare percentiles, not raw totals. GMAC itself points schools to percentiles for Focus scores.
- Skip cutoff lists written for the old 200-800 scale.
- A below-average score does not end your chances. Work experience, essays and interviews also count.

How to Apply With a GMAT Score
- Book the GMAT Focus on mba.com, the official GMAC site.
- Take the test and send your score report to your shortlisted colleges.
- Shortlist by work experience, budget and programme length.
- Submit your resume, essays or SOP, and recommendations.
- Prepare for the interview.
- Plan your funding. The PM-Vidyalaxmi portal offers collateral-free, guarantor-free education loans at eligible institutions. Check whether your college is on its list.
Deadlines to note:
- SPJIMR: applications close 27 November 2026.
- IMT Ghaziabad: GMAT scores must arrive by 15 January 2027.
- IMI Delhi: scores up to January 2027 count.
- ISB, IIMA and IIMB: they run multiple rounds, so check each site for the current one.
Is a GMAT-Based MBA Worth the Fee?
Divide the fee by average pay for a quick payback check.
- ISB: ₹40.46 lakh ÷ ₹37.29 lakh is about 1.1 years of average pay.
- SPJIMR: ₹24.86 lakh ÷ ₹33.6 lakh is about 0.7 years.
This maths is rough. It ignores tax, living costs and loan interest. One-year programmes also cost you a year of salary.
Check approvals and rankings before you pay. Verify PGDM approval on the AICTE website and ranks on the NIRF portal.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using cutoff lists built for the old 200-800 scale.
- Assuming every IIM programme takes GMAT.
- Comparing pay figures that count different things.
- Budgeting only the headline fee. Add GST, immersion, mess and insurance.
- Sending online scores to IIMA. It takes test-centre scores only.
Conclusion
The top MBA colleges accepting GMAT scores in India offer working professionals a faster route to a strong MBA. ISB, IIMA’s PGPX, IIMB’s EPGP and SPJIMR lead on both fees and reported pay.
Start with the programme type. Choose one-year or two-year first, then match your GMAT Focus score to the class benchmark. Confirm every fee and deadline on the college website before you apply.
