Almost none will mention the essay. I get it, because the essay feels like the easy part. It isn’t, because you can’t cram for it. It tests how clearly you think when someone hands you a topic and a clock.

This guide covers what you actually need: where the XAT essay fits today, how to structure one, how to spend your time, what the common essay topics look like, and two full sample essays you can pick apart. This is where a lot of older articles go wrong, so it’s worth getting straight.

The official XAT 2027 pattern has four sections and no essay. The exam is on 3 January 2027, 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM.

Table 1: XAT 2027 Written Test (Official)

Section

Questions

Time

Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning

26

Part 1: 170 minutes for all three sections together

Decision Making

21

Part 1

Quantitative Aptitude & Data Interpretation

28

Part 1

General Knowledge

20

Part 2: 10 minutes

Total

95

180 minutes

So when people talk about the “XAT essay” today, they mean Analytical Essay Writing (AEW), the round XLRI runs later for shortlisted candidates. Prep sources describe the same handful of things again and again, and they’re what any essay reader rewards:

Relevance: you answered the topic you were given, not a nearby one.

Structure: a clear position early on, a logical flow, and an ending that closes the argument.

Reasoning: actual reasons rather than slogans, plus a fair look at the other side.

Examples: concrete and accurate ones.

Language: simple, correct and easy to follow. The fix is simple: in your first two sentences, turn the abstract idea into something concrete, and the rest gets much easier.

A Structure That Works Every Time

With so little time, you can’t afford to wander. Use five parts:

Opening and stance (2 to 3 sentences): answer the topic straight away.

First argument, with one example: your strongest point.

Second argument, with one example: a different angle, for example customer versus company, or short term versus long term.

Counterpoint (2 to 3 sentences): admit what the other side gets right, then explain why you still hold your view.

Conclusion (2 sentences): sharpen your stance and leave the reader with one real insight.

Two arguments done well beat four done badly. The person reading your essay has read dozens that day, and a clear spine stands out.

How to Spend 20 Minutes

Table 4: Minute-by-Minute Plan for a 20-Minute Essay

Step

Minutes

What to Do

Understand the topic

1

Underline the key term and work out what you’ve been asked to do: agree, disagree or discuss

Plan

3

Jot down your stance, two arguments, one example for each, and one counterpoint

Opening

2

Put your stance in the first two lines

Body

9

About 4 to 5 minutes per argument

Counterpoint and conclusion

3

Close the loop

Review

2

Cut repetition, fix unclear lines, and check you answered the topic

If you only get 15 minutes, trim planning to 2, the body to 7, and review to 1.5. Whatever happens, write a conclusion. An essay that stops mid-argument looks like unfinished thinking.

Sample Essay 1

Topic: “Brands tend to be politically correct at the cost of business.”

Brands rarely lose money by being politically correct; they lose it by being inconsistent. The claim confuses two different things: caution and conviction.

Consider the cost side first. In 2023, a Bud Light influencer partnership triggered a consumer boycott in the United States, and the brand lost its position as the country’s top-selling beer. Yet the damage came less from the message than from its mismatch with core customers and the brand’s hurried retreat afterwards. A brand that stands nowhere eventually offends everyone.

Now consider the benefit side. Patagonia’s 2011 “Don’t Buy This Jacket” advertisement ran against short-term sales logic, but it reinforced an identity as an environmental brand, which supports the loyalty and premium pricing the company enjoys today. Here, a principled position was business strategy.

So the real question is not whether to take positions, but whether they are authentic and aligned with the customer. Brands that borrow causes for a campaign pay twice: once for the campaign, and again for the backlash.

Therefore, political correctness costs business only when it is performative. Where it flows from a clear purpose, it builds trust that outlasts any quarter. Managers should treat brand values like capital: invest deliberately, and never spend what you cannot defend.

(About 205 words.)

What this essay does well: The first line doesn’t just agree or disagree. It questions the topic itself, which shows the writer is thinking rather than reacting. Each argument has one example, one for each side, so the essay feels balanced. There are no invented statistics, so nothing in it can be challenged. And the last line gives a practical takeaway instead of repeating the opening.

Sample Essay 2

Topic: “Leadership in times of uncertainty.”

Uncertainty does not test a leader’s plans; it tests the leader’s judgment about which plans to abandon.

In stable times, leadership is mostly execution. In uncertain times, information is incomplete and every choice carries risk, so three qualities matter: clarity, adaptability and trust.

Clarity means being honest about what is known and unknown. During the COVID-19 lockdowns, managers who explained what had been decided, why, and when it would be reviewed kept teams steadier than those who offered false certainty. A leader who says “I don’t know yet, but here is how we will find out” earns more credibility than one who guesses.

Adaptability means making reversible decisions quickly and irreversible ones slowly. Netflix’s move from DVD rentals to streaming shows a company willing to challenge its own profitable business before the market forced it to.

Trust lets people act without waiting for orders. Leaders who punish every wrong call create teams that freeze exactly when initiative is needed.

Critics argue that decisive, even autocratic, leadership works best in a crisis. Speed matters, but speed without buy-in fails: orders people do not believe in are followed slowly and abandoned early.

In short, uncertainty rewards leaders who combine honest communication, flexible strategy and psychological safety. Certainty cannot be promised, but direction can.

(About 210 words.)

What this essay does well: “Leadership” is a vague word, so the writer breaks it into three named qualities: clarity, adaptability and trust. That gives the reader something to hold on to. The short paragraphs are easy to skim, and the counterpoint gets a paragraph of its own, which is the step most candidates skip.

Build an Example Bank

Good examples are what separate a thoughtful essay from a generic one. Collect 15 to 20 across business, policy, technology and society. For each, write one line on what happened and one line on which argument it supports. Here’s a starter set.

Table 5: Starter Example Bank

Theme

Example

Argument It Can Support

Purpose-driven branding

Patagonia’s 2011 “Don’t Buy This Jacket” campaign

Taking a principled stand can strengthen brand loyalty

Adapting to disruption

Netflix’s shift from DVD rentals to streaming

Leaders must be willing to challenge their own successful models

Digital public infrastructure

UPI, built by NPCI and launched in 2016

Public digital platforms can drive inclusion and innovation

Education reform

National Education Policy 2020 (see the Ministry of Education)

Policy can push education toward flexibility and skills

Climate and development

India’s 2021 announcement of a 2070 net-zero target at COP26

Growth and long-term environmental goals have to be balanced

Future of work

Code on Social Security, 2020, which first recognised gig and platform workers in Indian law

Worker protections must evolve with new ways of working

A few ground rules for using examples:

Use only what you can explain in two sentences. If you can’t, leave it out.

Don’t quote numbers from memory. Is there an essay in the XAT 2027 exam?

No. The official pattern has four sections: Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Aptitude & Data Interpretation, and General Knowledge. There is no essay. Analytical Essay Writing happens later, for shortlisted candidates.

Also Read: XLRI Selection Process 2027: Complete Guide to MBA Admissions

2. How much time do you get for the XAT essay?

The official pattern doesn’t say. Prep sources report about 15 to 20 minutes, and it can vary by year. Practise with both 15 and 20 minutes.

3. What is the word limit for the XAT essay?

There’s no officially published limit. Prep sources commonly report 200 to 300 words. Aim to write a complete essay in 200 to 250 words, and follow the instructions XLRI gives you.

4. Does the essay count toward the XAT percentile?

No. Your percentile comes from the written test, and that test has no essay. The essay is assessed separately at the later stage.

5. What kind of XAT essay topics can I expect?

Reported themes include business and brand statements, leadership and ethics, technology and jobs, and abstract ideas. Practise all four types listed in Table 3.

6. Should I use statistics in my essay?

Only if you’re completely sure they’re accurate. A well-explained example with no numbers is better than a number you half remember.

7. How should I structure an XAT essay in 20 minutes?

Spend about 3 minutes planning, 11 minutes on the opening and two arguments, 3 minutes on the counterpoint and conclusion, and 2 minutes reviewing.

8. How can I improve quickly?

Write short, timed essays often, read one good newspaper editorial a day, and keep adding to your example bank. Most importantly, get someone else to critique your arguments.

Conclusion

A strong XAT essay doesn’t need fancy vocabulary or encyclopaedic knowledge. It needs a clear stance, two well-supported arguments, an honest nod to the other side, and an ending that adds something. Know where the essay actually sits (not in the written test, according to the official pattern), prepare with the structure and time plan above, and practise until the five-part framework becomes automatic.

Start today. Pick any topic from Table 3, set a 20-minute timer, and write one.
