If your paperwork is thin or inconsistent, that is where admissions go wrong.

The work experience documents required by IIMs are not one fixed list. They change by institute and by admission cycle. Some IIMs publish a detailed document list, some publish only the scoring formula, and a few tell you almost nothing until the call letter arrives.

This guide sticks to what the IIMs themselves have published, says clearly where a policy is silent, and tells you what to collect while you still have time. CAT 2026 is scheduled for November 29, 2026, so you have about five weeks.

Quick answer: The IIM policies we reviewed ask for some combination of an employer or experience letter with exact dates, appointment and relieving letters, first and last payslips, and a bank statement. IIM Bodh Gaya also asks for a statutory proof such as Form 16, EPF, ESIC or NPS. Self-employed candidates are asked for registration, licence and tax proof. Internships, apprenticeships and unpaid work are excluded, and some IIMs also reject cash or UPI salary.

Is Work Experience Mandatory for IIM Admission?

For the flagship MBA/PGP programmes, no. The policies we reviewed do not make work experience a condition for applying. Instead they convert your months of experience into points, and candidates with little or none simply score zero on that component. For example, IIM Ahmedabad gives 0 points for less than 12 months, and IIM Bangalore’s formula starts from zero months.

There are exceptions on the specialised tracks. IIM Lucknow’s MBA-SM programme (2026-28 batch) requires a minimum of 24 months of work experience.

So the practical rule is simple: experience is optional, but whatever you claim must be backed by paper.

Also Read: CAT 2026: Eligibility Criteria — The Complete Guide

Work Experience Documents Required by IIMs: What the Policies Say

There is no single national checklist, so here is what each institute has actually published. What work experience documents are required by IIMs?

The policies we reviewed ask for an employer or experience letter with exact dates, appointment and relieving letters, and payslips (first and last at several IIMs). IIM Lucknow and IIM Bodh Gaya also ask for a bank statement, and IIM Bodh Gaya adds a statutory proof such as Form 16, EPF, ESIC or NPS. Self-employed candidates are asked for registration and tax proof. Exact lists vary, so follow your target IIM’s policy.

2. Is work experience mandatory for IIM admission?

Not for the flagship MBA/PGP programmes in the policies we reviewed, where candidates with little or no experience simply score zero on that component. Some specialised tracks differ: IIM Lucknow’s MBA-SM requires a minimum of 24 months.

3. Are payslips alone enough as proof of work experience?

No policy we reviewed accepts payslips on their own. IIM Bangalore pairs them with experience letters, IIM Calcutta with employer letters, and IIM Lucknow and IIM Bodh Gaya with additional letters and a bank statement.

4. Is cash or UPI salary accepted as work experience proof?

IIM Bodh Gaya and JAP explicitly do not accept salary paid in cash or through UPI apps. IIM Bodh Gaya also rejects irregular payments and salary received in a joint account. The other policies we reviewed do not address it, so bank-transfer proof is the safest assumption.

5. Do IIMs count family business or startup experience?

It depends on the institute. IIM Calcutta allows self-employed and family-business candidates to submit company registration, licences and proof of taxes paid when payslips are not available. IIM Bodh Gaya accepts proprietors, partners and directors with documents such as ITRs, registration certificates, GST registration and a partnership deed. JAP excludes family-enterprise work and owner work in proprietorships or partnerships. The other policies reviewed do not say, so ask in writing before you claim it.

6. What if my previous employer will not give an experience or relieving letter?

None of the policies we reviewed offers a published fallback for employees. Write to the admissions office of your target IIM early, explain the situation, and ask what they will accept. Do not substitute self-made documents.

Work Experience Documents Required by IIMs Conclusion

The work experience documents required by IIMs come down to one principle: every month you claim needs a paper trail that tells the same story, from the employer letter with exact dates to the payslips and bank entries. The details differ by institute, and several IIMs publish very little, so your safest move is to collect the full set now and then confirm the exact list with each IIM you target.

Your next step: open a folder today, list every job you plan to declare, and tick off its documents against the checklist above. Then read the official policy of each IIM on your list.
