Class 12 alone is worth 25 points at shortlisting, the heaviest weighting of any IIM we reviewed. QA carries the most CAT weight at shortlisting (23 points), while VARC takes over in the final score (20).

IIM Selection Criteria 2027 Compared

Parameter

IIM Ahmedabad

IIM Bangalore

IIM Calcutta

IIM Indore (2026-28)

CAT share at shortlisting

65%

55 of 100

56 of 85 (~66%)

55 of 100

CAT share in final score

Inside the 40% composite

25 of 100

30 of 100

40 of 100

Personal Interview

50%

40

48

45

Written test

10% (AWT)

10 (WAT)

8 (WAT)

Not listed

Class 10 + 12 at shortlisting

20 of 38 rating points

20 of 100

25 of 85

35 of 100

What the table tells you: at all four IIMs the interview weighs far more than any other single factor in the final score. CAT is what gets you in the room, and the interview is where seats are won.

Minimum CAT Cut-offs vs. Selection Criteria

Cut-offs and selection criteria are different things. A cut-off is a floor you must clear. The criteria are the scoring formula that ranks everyone above it.

IIM (General)

Overall

Sectional

IIM Ahmedabad

95

85 each

IIM Bangalore

85

VARC 80, DILR 75, QA 75

IIM Calcutta

85

VARC 80, DILR 80, QA 75

IIM Indore (2026-28)

90

80 each

Reserved categories get lower floors. For example, IIM Ahmedabad’s overall cut-off is 90 for NC-OBC, 85 for SC and 75 for ST.

The real bar is the composite score. In the previous cycle’s RTI data, the minimum pre-PI composite for General candidates was about 50.5 at IIM Bangalore and about 52.7 (out of 85) at IIM Calcutta. IIM Indore’s General range was roughly 60–67 (out of 100). These are last cycle’s figures, so use them as a guide, not a prediction.

Academics, Work Experience and Diversity: Where Extra Points Come From

Class 10, Class 12 and Graduation

Academic scores are fixed once you graduate, but they are scored heavily. Together, Class 10 and 12 are worth 25 of 85 shortlisting points at IIM Calcutta and 35 of 100 at IIM Indore.

Work experience

It is optional, and its value usually rises, peaks and then falls. In the latest published policies we reviewed:

IIM

How experience is scored

IIM Bangalore

Rises to the maximum of 10 at 36 months and stays flat after

IIM Calcutta

8 of 100 final points

IIM Tiruchirappalli, IIM Ranchi

Peak at 24–29 months, zero from 48 months

IIM Jammu

Peak at 24–36 months, zero above 60

IIM Sambalpur, IIM Sirmaur

20 of 100 points, the highest in the system

The pattern is that roughly 24–36 months is the sweet spot.
