Candidates must be at least 18 years old to register and take the GMAT exam. However, candidates aged 13 to 17 years may also appear for the exam with written consent from a parent or legal guardian. There is no upper age limit for taking the GMAT. The Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) does not prescribe any specific educational qualification, minimum percentage, or CGPA requirement for appearing in the exam, which means candidates from any academic background are eligible to apply. Additionally, work experience is not mandatory for taking the GMAT, although many MBA programs may prefer applicants with professional experience. Candidates must carry a valid passport or other accepted identification document as per GMAT testing policies. A candidate can take the GMAT up to five times within a rolling 12-month period, with a minimum gap of 16 days between attempts. Since admission requirements vary across institutions, candidates should also review the specific eligibility criteria of the business schools and management programs to which they intend to apply.

Unlike many entrance exams, the GMAT does not have a fixed cutoff score set by the conducting body. Instead, each business school determines its own GMAT score requirements based on factors such as program competitiveness, applicant pool, academic profile, and work experience. Generally, top global MBA programs prefer higher GMAT scores, while many reputable business schools accept a broader range of scores. A strong GMAT score can significantly enhance an applicant's chances of admission, but it is usually considered alongside other factors such as academic performance, professional experience, essays, recommendations, and interviews. Therefore, candidates should check the average or recommended GMAT scores of their target business schools and aim for a score that aligns with their admission goals.Unlike Indian MBA entrance exams such as CAT, the GMAT does not have category-wise cutoffs (General, OBC, SC, ST). Global business schools that accept the GMAT follow a holistic admission process and do not publish reservation-based cutoff scores. Instead, they usually release average or median GMAT scores of admitted students.
