MAT
Management Aptitude Test.
Conducted by All India Management Association (AIMA)
MAT (Management Aptitude Test) is a national-level MBA/PGDM entrance exam conducted in India to evaluate candidates for admission into management programs. It has been a trusted admission test since 1988 and is designed to assess a candidateβs aptitude in business and management-related skills. The exam is conducted by the All India Management Association (AIMA), a national body responsible for organizing MAT across India. MAT is used by B-Schools to shortlist candidates for MBA programs, PGDM programs, and other management courses, making it a common entrance test for management education in India. It is accepted by more than 600 B-Schools across the country, including private universities, institutes, and management colleges, making it one of the most widely accepted MBA entrance exams in India. The exam evaluates candidates across five major skill areas: Language Comprehension, Intelligence & Critical Reasoning, Mathematical Skills, Data Analysis & Sufficiency, and Economic & Business Environment. MAT consists of 150 multiple-choice questions divided into five sections, with 30 questions in each section, and the total duration of the exam is 120 minutes (2 hours). It is conducted four times a year in February, May, September, and December, and is available in different modes such as Paper-Based Test (PBT), Computer-Based Test (CBT), and sometimes Internet-Based Test (IBT), depending on the session. The exam follows a moderate difficulty level and allows multiple attempts, with the best score considered for admission. There is no age limit for appearing in MAT. The marking scheme awards +1 mark for every correct answer and deducts 0.25 marks for every incorrect answer. Overall, MAT is a flexible and widely recognized national-level MBA entrance exam conducted by AIMA, offering students multiple opportunities each year to secure admission into reputed management colleges across India.

The MAT (Management Aptitude Test) eligibility criteria, as prescribed by AIMA, state that candidates must have a Bachelorβs degree in any discipline from a recognized university or equivalent institution, and final-year undergraduate students (such as B.A, B.Com, B.Sc, B.Tech, etc.) are also eligible to apply on a provisional basis. There is no minimum percentage requirement set by AIMA for appearing in the MAT exam; however, some participating B-schools may require around 50% marks for general category candidates and 45% for reserved categories during the admission process. The exam has no age limit, making it open to candidates of all age groups, and no work experience is required, allowing both fresh graduates and working professionals to apply. In terms of nationality, Indian candidates are eligible, and foreign or NRI candidates may also apply depending on the specific rules of participating institutes.

The MAT (Management Aptitude Test) cutoff refers to the minimum percentile or score required by participating MBA/PGDM colleges to shortlist candidates for the next stages of admission, such as Group Discussion (GD), Personal Interview (PI), and Written Ability Test (WAT). Unlike some national-level exams, MAT does not have a single centralized cutoff; instead, each B-school independently sets its own cutoff based on factors such as the number of applicants, difficulty level of the exam, seat availability, and institute reputation. Generally, top management institutes may require higher percentiles, while mid- and lower-tier colleges accept comparatively lower scores. Meeting the MAT cutoff does not guarantee admission but only qualifies candidates for the selection process of individual institutes. Important: MAT cutoffs are not fixed by AIMA, so these are official college-wise admission trends (2024β2026 expected range).

MAT (Management Aptitude Test) scores are accepted by a wide range of AICTE-approved MBA and PGDM colleges across India, making it one of the most widely used entrance exams for management admissions. More than 600 to 800 business schools consider MAT scores for shortlisting candidates, depending on the admission cycle. These colleges include a mix of top-tier, mid-tier, and emerging management institutes located in major cities such as Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Pune. MAT participating institutes use the score to shortlist candidates for further selection rounds such as Group Discussion (GD), Personal Interview (PI), and Written Ability Test (WAT). However, each college sets its own cutoff and admission criteria, meaning the MAT score is only a qualifying factor and not a guarantee of admission.
