NMAT 2026 β€” Overview

NMAT (Narsee Monjee Management Aptitude Test) by GMACβ„’ is a national-level MBA entrance examination conducted by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC). The exam is designed to assess the skills required for management education and is accepted by leading business schools in India and several international institutions. GMAC took ownership of the exam from NMIMS in 2015, and since then it has been officially known as NMAT by GMACβ„’. NMAT is a computer-based adaptive test, meaning the difficulty level of questions adjusts according to a candidate's performance during the exam. The test evaluates candidates across three sections: Language Skills, Quantitative Skills, and Logical Reasoning. The exam is known for its candidate-friendly features such as no negative marking, the flexibility to choose the section order, and the opportunity to take the exam up to three times in a testing year to improve scores. The exam consists of 108 questions to be completed in 120 minutes. NMAT scores are accepted by leading business schools in India as well as institutions in South Africa, the Philippines, Nigeria, Hungary, and Morocco. More than 58 institutions in India accept NMAT scores for admission to MBA and other management programs.

About NMAT

NMAT is considered one of the most flexible MBA entrance exams because it allows candidates to schedule the exam during a testing window, retake the exam to improve scores, and attempt all questions without the fear of negative marking. These features help candidates maximize their performance and improve their chances of admission to top management institutes.

NMAT 2026 Eligibility Criteria
The NMAT by GMACβ„’ exam is open to candidates aspiring to pursue MBA and other postgraduate management programs offered by participating business schools. GMAC has designed the eligibility requirements to ensure that graduates from diverse academic backgrounds can apply for the exam. In general, candidates must hold a bachelor's degree from a recognized university, while students in the final year of their graduation are also eligible to register and appear for the test. Since NMAT scores are accepted by multiple institutions, candidates should also check the specific eligibility requirements of the individual colleges to which they plan to apply. The NMAT eligibility criteria are straightforward, making the exam accessible to a wide range of management aspirants across India and abroad.

The NMAT by GMACβ„’ exam is open to candidates who hold a bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognized university or institution. Students who are in the final year of their graduation can also apply, provided they complete their degree requirements as prescribed by the participating institutes. While GMAC does not specify a minimum graduation percentage for appearing in the exam, many participating business schools generally require candidates to have at least 50% aggregate marks in their bachelor's degree, though this may vary across institutions. There is no upper age limit for taking the NMAT exam, making it accessible to candidates of all age groups who meet the educational qualifications. Both Indian and international candidates are eligible to register for NMAT by GMAC. Additionally, candidates can take the exam up to three times in a testing year (one main attempt and two retakes) to improve their scores. Work experience is not mandatory for appearing in NMAT; however, some business schools may give preference to candidates with relevant professional experience during the admission process.

NMAT 2026 Cutoff Scores

The NMAT cutoff refers to the minimum score required by a participating business school to shortlist candidates for the next stage of the admission process, such as Written Ability Test (WAT), Group Discussion (GD), Competency Assessment, or Personal Interview (PI). Unlike some MBA entrance exams, NMAT does not have a common cutoff applicable to all institutes. Each participating B-school independently determines its cutoff based on factors such as the number of applicants, exam difficulty level, seat availability, previous admission trends, and the quality of the applicant pool. Candidates who meet or exceed the prescribed cutoff become eligible for further rounds of selection, although final admission depends on overall performance throughout the admission process. Generally, NMAT cutoffs for leading institutes range between 150 and 250 marks, with top colleges requiring higher scores. Important Note: NMAT-participating institutes generally do not publish separate category-wise cutoffs (General/OBC/SC/ST/EWS) on a common platform. Most colleges release either overall cutoff scores or shortlist criteria. Therefore, verified category-wise NMAT cutoffs are not officially available for many institutes. The tables below contain the latest available official/expected cutoff scores for admissions through NMAT 2025.

NMAT Preparation Tips
Study Schedule
Aspirants preparing for NMAT by GMACβ„’ can follow a structured daily study schedule of 3–4 hours to ensure balanced preparation across all sections. Dedicate 1 hour to Quantitative Skills for strengthening concepts such as Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, and Data Interpretation. Spend another 1 hour on Logical Reasoning, focusing on puzzles, seating arrangements, critical reasoning, and analytical thinking. Allocate 45 minutes to Language Skills for Reading Comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and verbal reasoning practice. Additionally, reserve 30 minutes for revision and error analysis to review previously learned concepts and identify mistakes made during practice sessions. Finally, spend 15–30 minutes developing a reading habit, which may include reading newspapers, business magazines, editorials, and learning new vocabulary. Consistently following this schedule can help candidates improve their conceptual understanding, speed, and accuracy, which are crucial for achieving a high NMAT score.
Mock Test Strategy
Mock tests play a crucial role in NMAT preparation because they help candidates become familiar with the exam pattern, improve time management skills, and identify strengths and weaknesses across all sections. Since NMAT consists of 108 questions to be solved in 120 minutes, regular mock test practice is essential for developing the speed and accuracy required to achieve a competitive score. Candidates should begin with sectional tests after completing the basic concepts of Language Skills, Quantitative Skills, and Logical Reasoning. Once comfortable with the syllabus, they should start taking full-length NMAT mock tests under actual exam conditions. During the initial phase of preparation, attempting one to two mock tests per week is sufficient. As the exam approaches, the frequency should be increased to three to four mocks per week to build stamina and improve performance under pressure. The most important aspect of mock test preparation is analysis. After every mock, candidates should carefully review their performance, identify incorrect answers, understand the reasons behind mistakes, and note topics that require additional practice. Maintaining an error log can help track recurring mistakes and ensure continuous improvement. Candidates should also analyze the time spent on each section and work on strategies to complete all questions within the allotted sectional time limits. Since NMAT does not have negative marking, aspirants should practice attempting every question during mock tests. This helps develop the habit of maximizing attempts without the fear of losing marks for incorrect answers. Mock tests should also be used to experiment with different pacing strategies and question-selection techniques to determine the most effective approach for the actual exam.In the final month before the exam, the focus should shift primarily to mock tests, revision, and performance analysis. Candidates should revise formulas, vocabulary, reasoning concepts, and shortcut techniques while continuing to take regular mocks. A disciplined mock test strategy combined with thorough analysis can significantly improve overall scores and increase the chances of securing admission to top NMAT-accepting business schools.
Exam-Day Tips
Success in NMAT by GMACβ„’ depends on effective time management, confidence, and a calm approach on exam day. Reach the test center early with your admit card and valid photo ID, and carefully read all instructions before starting the test. Since NMAT consists of 108 questions in 120 minutes and has no negative marking, aim to attempt all questions while maintaining a steady pace. Avoid spending too much time on difficult questions, keep track of the sectional time limits, and focus on maximizing accuracy. Get adequate sleep the night before, eat a light meal, and stay relaxed throughout the exam. With proper preparation and smart time management, you can maximize your score and improve your chances of admission to top NMAT-accepting business schools.
