Last updated: 6 October 2026
It’s October, your CAT prep is in full swing, and a friend says, “Just write IBSAT too. And MICAT. More shots, right?” Maybe. But these three exams don’t work like three attempts at the same lottery. One is a national gateway, one is a single institution group’s admission test, and one is an add-on that, for MICA’s flagship programmes, can’t be taken in place of a CAT, XAT or GMAT score.
This guide to CAT vs IBSAT vs MICAT compares them on pattern, difficulty, eligibility and timing for the 2026–27 cycle. It also helps you decide where your time should go.
Quick Summary
- CAT is the national exam for the IIMs and 1,000+ other institutes. It is the hardest of the three and carries negative marking on MCQs.
- IBSAT is the entrance test for ICFAI Business School’s nine campuses. It has no negative marking and is taken from home.
- MICAT is MICA Ahmedabad’s admission test. For PGDM and PGDM-C you also need a valid CAT, XAT or GMAT score.
- Best strategy for most aspirants: treat CAT as the base and the other two as layers.
- Clash alert: MICAT-I and the first IBSAT date both fall on 5 December 2026.

What Each Exam Really Is
CAT: the national gateway
The Common Admission Test rotates among the older IIMs, and IIM Indore conducts CAT 2026. The paper has 68 questions across three sections of 40 minutes each, 120 minutes in total, worth a maximum of 204 marks. You must take the sections in a fixed order and can’t switch between them.
Scale matters here. About 2.95 lakh candidates registered for CAT 2025, and roughly 2.58 lakh appeared. That is why CAT works as the foundation exam: the preparation carries over into the other two.
IBSAT: the speed-and-fundamentals test
IBSAT is the entrance test for IBS campuses. IBS offers MBA programmes at Hyderabad, Dehradun, Jaipur and Bangalore, and PGPM programmes at Ahmedabad, Gurgaon, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune. The paper has 140 MCQs in two hours, one mark each, with no negative marking.
Here is a catch most guides miss. IBS also accepts CAT, XAT, NMAT or GMAT scores, but you still complete the IBS application form. In the previous cycle, IBS offered ₹2 lakh scholarships to top IBSAT performers, and candidates who applied only on other exam scores weren’t eligible. Confirm the 2026 terms at ibsindia.org.
For application details, see our IBSAT 2026 application guide.
MICAT: the creative-communications test
MICAT has a psychometric qualifier, a descriptive writing section and a four-part aptitude section. It rewards clear writing and original thinking.
MICAT is an add-on for the flagship programmes. For PGDM-C and PGDM, MICA requires a valid CAT, XAT or GMAT score alongside it. MICA’s published selection criteria for the 2026–28 batch weighted CAT/XAT/GMAT at 35% and MICAT at 25%, so your CAT score counts for more than MICAT in the composite. Confirm the 2027–29 weightage on mica.ac.in. The one-year PGCM programmes work differently and need MICAT alone.

Exam Pattern Compared
| Parameter | CAT | IBSAT | MICAT |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total questions | 68 | 140 | Multi-part test |
| Duration | 120 min (40 per section) | 120 min (no sectional limit) | Per MICA’s bulletin |
| Verbal | VARC: 24 | VA: 50 + RC: 30 | Verbal ability (aptitude section) |
| Quant | QA: 22 | QA: 30 | Quant and DI (aptitude section) |
| Data and logic | DILR: 22 | Data Adequacy and DI: 30 | Divergent-convergent reasoning |
| General awareness | No | No | Yes |
| Writing | No | No | Yes (descriptive test) |
| Marking | +3 / −1 (MCQ); none for TITA | +1; no negative | See MICA’s bulletin |
| Maximum marks | 204 | 140 | Per MICA’s bulletin |
IBSAT is verbal-heavy: VA and RC are 80 of the 140 questions, more than half the paper. CAT is balanced and reasoning-heavy. MICAT is the only one that tests personality and writing.
Difficulty Level: Which Is Toughest?
CAT is widely regarded as the hardest of the three. It draws a very large pool, penalises wrong MCQs and asks for deeper problem-solving. IBSAT is generally rated moderate: it leans on fundamentals and speed, and without negative marking it is more forgiving. MICAT’s aptitude content is manageable, but the psychometric and descriptive parts need dedicated preparation.
| Exam | Why it feels hard | Why it feels easier |
|---|---|---|
| CAT | High competition, negative marking, tough DILR | Predictable pattern, huge prep ecosystem |
| IBSAT | Speed across 140 questions | No negative marking; core topics |
| MICAT | Writing and creativity are hard to “mock” | Smaller applicant pool |
Eligibility and Score Dependencies
- CAT needs no other exam score. Degree and minimum-marks criteria are in the official bulletin at iimcat.ac.in.
- IBSAT is the route into IBS programmes, which also accept valid CAT, NMAT, XAT or GMAT scores from 2024 onwards.
- MICAT needs a valid CAT, XAT or GMAT score for PGDM and PGDM-C. You don’t have to use CAT; XAT or GMAT also qualifies.
So a CAT score can feed both of the others, while IBSAT and MICAT can’t feed each other.

Which Exam Should You Take?
| If you are… | Prioritise |
|---|---|
| Aiming for IIMs or other top-tier B-schools | CAT first; treat the others as backups |
| Drawn to marketing, media or brand strategy | CAT + MICAT |
| Looking for a lower-pressure backup with no negative marking | IBSAT |
| Strong in English but cautious about heavy quant | IBSAT, which is more verbal-weighted |
| Creative, with strong writing | MICAT, once you hold a CAT, XAT or GMAT score |
| Missed CAT 2026 registration | IBSAT; MICAT only if you hold a valid XAT or GMAT score |
Can You Prepare for All Three? A Practical Plan
This split is a suggestion, not data.
| Exam | Share of prep time | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| CAT | ~75–80% | Full mocks, sectionals, DILR practice |
| IBSAT | ~10–15% | Vocabulary, grammar, speed drills |
| MICAT | ~10% | Writing practice, current affairs, psychometric familiarity |
- Now to 29 Nov: commit to CAT with timed full-length mocks and careful analysis.
- Last two weeks of CAT prep: add short daily vocabulary and para-jumble drills. They help CAT’s VARC and IBSAT.
- After CAT: if you target MICA, consider MICAT-II on 12 Feb instead of MICAT-I six days after CAT. That leaves time for the descriptive test.
- IBSAT: pick a date after 5 December and rehearse full 140-question timed sets.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Treating IBSAT like CAT. There is no penalty in IBSAT, so skipping questions only costs you marks.
- Assuming MICAT replaces CAT. For PGDM and PGDM-C, a CAT, XAT or GMAT score is still required.
- Ignoring the writing test. Strong aptitude doesn’t guarantee a good descriptive score.
- Relying on old dates. Cycles change yearly, so check iimcat.ac.in, mica.ac.in and ibsindia.org.
Key Takeaways
- CAT is the gateway; IBSAT and MICAT are institution-specific layers.
- IBSAT has no negative marking; CAT penalises wrong MCQs.
- MICA’s composite weights CAT/XAT/GMAT (35%) above MICAT (25%), per its published 2026–28 criteria.
- Avoid IBSAT on 5 December, when MICAT-I is held.
- Put most of your preparation time into CAT, then specialise.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is IBSAT easier than CAT?
Generally yes. IBSAT focuses on fundamentals and speed with no negative marking, while CAT tests deeper problem-solving against far larger competition.
Can I take MICAT without a CAT score?
For MICA’s PGDM and PGDM-C, you need a valid CAT, XAT or GMAT score, so MICAT can’t replace them. The one-year PGCM programmes use MICAT alone.
Does IBSAT have negative marking?
No. Each correct answer earns one mark and wrong answers are not penalised.
Is CAT negative marking the same for all questions?
No. MCQs carry −1 for a wrong answer, while typed-in (TITA) questions have no negative marking.
How much weight does MICA give MICAT compared with CAT?
MICA’s published criteria for the 2026–28 batch gave CAT/XAT/GMAT 35% and MICAT 25%. Check mica.ac.in for the 2027–29 batch.
Can I use my CAT score instead of writing IBSAT?
IBS accepts valid CAT scores from 2024 onwards, but you still complete the IBS application form. Taking IBSAT may also make you eligible for IBSAT-linked scholarships, so check the current terms.
Which exam should a CAT aspirant add first, IBSAT or MICAT?
IBSAT is easier to add because its content overlaps CAT’s verbal and quant. MICAT needs separate writing preparation, so add it only if you want MICA.
Conclusion
The choice isn’t really CAT versus IBSAT versus MICAT. It’s the order you tackle them in. CAT gives you the widest reach, and your preparation for it carries into the other two. IBSAT is a no-penalty backup, and MICAT is a specialist route for communications-minded candidates who already hold a qualifying score.
