IIM Selection Criteria 2027: How CAT, Profile and Interview Scores Decide Your Seat

Ask ten CAT aspirants what decides an IIM seat, and nine will say “percentile.” The published formulas tell a different story. At IIM Ahmedabad, the personal interview carries half of the final score. At IIM Bangalore, CAT is worth 55 points at shortlisting but only 25 points in the final merit list.

That shift is the core of the IIM selection criteria 2027. This guide shows how each stage is scored, how the weights compare across four IIMs, and what that means for your profile. CAT 2026 is on 29 November 2026, 27 days from today.

A note on data: Official 2027-29 policies for IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore and IIM Calcutta are published. The latest policy we could confirm for IIM Indore is still the 2026-28 one, and we label it that way. Treat any 2026-28 figure as a benchmark and check each institute’s own admission page for changes.

Quick Summary: IIM Selection Criteria 2027

PointWhat to remember
StagesStage 1 shortlists you for the interview. Stage 2 builds the final merit list.
CAT’s roleLargest single factor at shortlisting, but its weight falls in the final score
Interview (PI)40–50% of the final score at the four IIMs covered below
AcademicsClass 10, Class 12 and graduation marks are scored at most IIMs
Work experienceOptional, usually worth 3–10 points, and often tapers beyond about 3–4 years
Cut-offsMinimum percentiles only make you eligible to be considered

How the IIM Selection Process 2027 Works

Every IIM follows two stages after the CAT result:

  1. Shortlisting for PI/WAT: The IIM ranks candidates who clear its cut-offs on a composite of CAT and profile factors. The top slice in each category gets an interview call.
  2. Final selection: Interview and written-test scores join the earlier components, and the IIM builds a category-wise merit list.

CAT enters both stages as a score converted from your percentile. Since the percentile moves with paper difficulty, it helps to see how score and percentile related in CAT 2025.

The weights change between stages, so each stage rewards different strengths. Here is how the four IIMs do it.

IIM Ahmedabad Selection Criteria 2027-29

IIM Ahmedabad splits profile factors into an Application Rating worth up to 38 points.

PI shortlisting: 65% normalised CAT 2026 percentile + 35% normalised Application Rating.

Normalised composite score (from shortlisting)40%

The General/EWS minimum is 95 overall with 85 in each section. You can confirm the current policy on the IIM Ahmedabad admissions page.

IIM Bangalore Selection Criteria 2027-29

IIM Bangalore uses a 100-point score at both stages, but CAT’s share shrinks sharply.

The 55 CAT points are split by section: VARC 19, DILR 21, QA 15. DILR carries the most weight here, which is unusual. If your reading skills are your strength, the guide on how to attempt CAT VARC in 40 minutes will help you convert them into marks.

IIM Calcutta Selection Criteria 2027-29

StageComponents and points
PI/WAT shortlisting (85 points)CAT scaled score 56, Class 12 marks 15, Class 10 marks 10, gender diversity 4
Final selection (100 points)PI 48, CAT 30, WAT 8, work experience 8, academic diversity 6

CAT is about 66% of the shortlisting score (56 of 85) and 30% of the final score. Meeting the cut-off is never enough, because the IIM ranks candidates category by category on composite scores.

IIM Indore Selection Criteria (Latest Published: PGP 2026-28)

IIM Indore had not published a separate 2027-29 procedure when we last confirmed. Its latest policy has a very different shape:

Two things stand out. Class 12 alone is worth 25 points at shortlisting, the heaviest weighting of any IIM we reviewed. QA carries the most CAT weight at shortlisting (23 points), while VARC takes over in the final score (20).

What the table tells you: at all four IIMs the interview weighs far more than any other single factor in the final score. CAT is what gets you in the room, and the interview is where seats are won.

Minimum CAT Cut-offs vs. Selection Criteria

Cut-offs and selection criteria are different things. A cut-off is a floor you must clear. The criteria are the scoring formula that ranks everyone above it.

IIM (General)OverallSectional
IIM Ahmedabad9585 each
IIM Bangalore85VARC 80, DILR 75, QA 75
IIM Calcutta85VARC 80, DILR 80, QA 75
IIM Indore (2026-28)9080 each

Reserved categories get lower floors. For example, IIM Ahmedabad’s overall cut-off is 90 for NC-OBC, 85 for SC and 75 for ST.

The real bar is the composite score. In the previous cycle’s RTI data, the minimum pre-PI composite for General candidates was about 50.5 at IIM Bangalore and about 52.7 (out of 85) at IIM Calcutta. IIM Indore’s General range was roughly 60–67 (out of 100). These are last cycle’s figures, so use them as a guide, not a prediction.

Academics, Work Experience and Diversity: Where Extra Points Come From

Class 10, Class 12 and Graduation

Academic scores are fixed once you graduate, but they are scored heavily. Together, Class 10 and 12 are worth 25 of 85 shortlisting points at IIM Calcutta and 35 of 100 at IIM Indore.

Work experience

It is optional, and its value usually rises, peaks and then falls. In the latest published policies we reviewed:

IIMHow experience is scored
IIM BangaloreRises to the maximum of 10 at 36 months and stays flat after
IIM Calcutta8 of 100 final points
IIM Tiruchirappalli, IIM RanchiPeak at 24–29 months, zero from 48 months
IIM JammuPeak at 24–36 months, zero above 60
IIM Sambalpur, IIM Sirmaur20 of 100 points, the highest in the system

The pattern is that roughly 24–36 months is the sweet spot. If you have more than four years of experience, the flagship points may fade, and an executive programme can suit you better.

How to Get Admission in IIM: A 27-Day Plan

The criteria suggest three priorities between now and 29 November:

  1. Protect every section. Nearly every IIM needs a positive score in all three sections and sectional percentiles on top. Take full-length CAT mock tests in your slot’s time window and review each one for as long as you attempted it.
  2. Practise selection, not only solving. Work through CAT previous year papers to learn which questions to skip.
  3. Start your interview groundwork now. With PI at 40–50% of the final score, a week spent on your profile story is worth more than the last few mock questions.

Common Mistakes in IIM MBA Admission 2027

  • Assuming the minimum cut-off guarantees a PI call.
  • Comparing composite scores across IIMs. Each IIM uses a different scale.
  • Ignoring Class 10 and 12 marks until the IIM publishes the weights.
  • Treating 2026-28 numbers as final for 2027-29.
  • Leaving interview preparation until after the CAT result.
