MDI Gurgaon Admission Process 2027–29: Selection Criteria & Admission Stages

Last updated: October 1, 2026

The MDI Gurgaon admission process for the 2027-29 batch is a two-stage, merit-based selection. A CAT score alone does not get you in. MDI first shortlists candidates on CAT 2026 plus profile, then ranks them on CAT, WAT, GD, PI, the Behavioural Assessment Test (BAT), academics, work experience and diversity. This guide explains the MDI Gurgaon selection criteria, how each stage works and where candidates can gain or lose marks.

Looking for dates, fees, eligibility or form-filling steps? Those are in our MDI Gurgaon application form 2027–29 guide. This article covers only how selection works.

Steps 1 and 2 are covered in detail in the application form guide. Everything from Step 3 onward is explained below.

Which Programmes Does This Process Cover?

MDI runs one unified application for its full-time programmes: PGDM, PGDM-HRM, PGDM-IB (International Business), PGDM-Business Analytics and PGDM-BFS. MDI Murshidabad’s PGDM uses the same form.

The Stage I and Stage II tables on MDI’s page are published for PGDM, PGDM-HRM, PGDM-IB and PGDM-Business Analytics. PGDM-BFS appears in the 2027-29 application listing but was not named in the 2026-28 selection document. Confirm its criteria on the official MDI admissions page.

Stage I: Shortlisting Criteria for WAT-GD-PI

MDI shortlists from the full pool of applicants using the details in your form and your CAT 2026 score. Here are the official 2027-29 weightages:

ComponentWeightage (2027-29)
CAT / GMAT* score65%
Class X percentage5%
Class XII percentage5%
Graduation percentage**5%
Academic diversity (engineer / non-engineer)5%
Gender diversity (male / female)5%
Work experience10%
Total100%

*GMAT applies only to PGDM-IB.
**Based on the second year or sixth term (pre-final year) for candidates still completing their degree.

How to read the Stage I table

  • CAT is the biggest lever, but not the only one. A 65% weight means a strong score helps, while 35% of Stage I comes from your profile.
  • Class X, XII and graduation add up to 15%. These are fixed by the time you apply, so the way to improve your Stage I standing is a better CAT score.
  • Diversity carries 10% of Stage I. Academic diversity and gender diversity are each 5%. MDI does not publish how these points are allotted to individual profiles on its admission page.
  • Work experience is 10%. Freshers should compensate through CAT performance and strong GD-PI rounds later.

Is there a CAT cutoff for MDI Gurgaon?

MDI does not publish an official cutoff for WAT-GD-PI shortlisting. Because the shortlist is a composite of CAT score and profile, the percentile needed varies by profile. Older community discussions have placed the typical shortlisting range at roughly 93–95+ percentile, but treat that as an unofficial indicator, not a guarantee.

Stage II: Final Selection Criteria (MDI Ranking)

Shortlisted candidates appear for WAT, GD and PI between February and April 2027. The final MDI ranking is calculated as follows:

ComponentWeightage (2027-29)
CAT / GMAT* score35%
Personal Interview (PI)20%
Group Discussion (GD)10%
Written Analysis Test (WAT)5%
Behavioural Assessment Test (BAT)5%
Graduation5%
Work experience10%
Academic diversity (engineer / non-engineer)2.5%
Gender diversity (male / female)2.5%
Regional diversity†2.5%
Sports‡2.5%
Total100%

†Candidates from the North-East, Jammu & Kashmir, Andaman & Nicobar, Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu, Ladakh and Lakshadweep.
‡Only for national and international level competitions.

Where the 100 marks actually sit

BlockComponentsCombined weight
Interview-round performancePI + GD + WAT + BAT40%
Entrance examCAT / GMAT35%
Work experienceWork experience10%
Diversity and sportsAcademic, gender, regional, sports10%
AcademicsGraduation5%

The takeaway is that the interview round is the single biggest block at the final stage. Many candidates stop preparing after CAT, but a candidate with a slightly lower CAT score can overtake others through strong WAT-GD-PI-BAT performance. Personal Interview alone (20%) is worth more than WAT, GD and BAT individually.

Inside the Selection Rounds: WAT, GD, BAT and PI

MDI’s page confirms the rounds and the February–April 2027 window. Detailed formats are not published there, so the notes below combine official facts with candidate-reported patterns from earlier cycles. Formats can change, so rely on your call letter for the final word.

Written Analysis Test (WAT) — 5%

Candidates write on a topic in a short time window. Earlier-cycle reports describe about 15 minutes with a roughly 150-word limit, and a topic that was later discussed in the GD. Past topics have ranged from social issues to business and policy questions.

How to score: take a clear stance, give two or three structured points with one example, and close with a conclusion. Clarity matters more than word-stuffing.

Group Discussion (GD) — 10%

Earlier reports describe groups of roughly 8–10 candidates and about 15 minutes per discussion on a single topic. Evaluators look at content, structure, listening, initiative and your ability to add value without dominating.

How to score: speak early but meaningfully, build on others’ points, and offer a short summary if the discussion becomes scattered.

Behavioural Assessment Test (BAT) — 5%

BAT is a distinctive part of MDI’s selection and carries a clear 5% weight. MDI has not detailed its exact format on the admissions page. Behavioural assessments generally test consistency, decision-making style and temperament, so there is little to “cram”.

How to approach it: answer honestly and consistently, and avoid trying to guess the “ideal” profile. Spend your effort on the rounds you can prepare for.

Personal Interview (PI) — 20%

This is the heaviest single component after CAT. Earlier-cycle reports describe a two-member panel and interviews of roughly 15–25 minutes. Questions typically begin with your background and move to academics, work experience, current affairs and your reasons for choosing MDI.

How to score:

  • Know every line of your application form, because interviewers pick questions from it.
  • Revise core concepts from your graduation subjects and your work role.
  • Prepare a clear “Why MDI, why this programme” answer.
  • Follow major business and economic news in the months before your interview.

NRI and International Applicants

NRI and international applicants (foreign nationals, OCIs and children of Indian workers in Gulf countries) follow a GMAT-based route for PGDM, PGDM-HRM and PGDM-IB at MDI Gurgaon. Shortlisted candidates are invited for a Personal Interview in April 2027, and admission status follows applicable Government of India rules. The fee and application details for this category are in the application form guide.

How to Maximise Your Score at Each Stage

StageWeight at stakeWhat you can still influence
CAT 2026 (Nov 29)65% of Stage I, 35% of Stage IIMock tests, sectional balance, accuracy
Application detailsStage I profile pointsAccurate, complete, error-free form
WAT5%Timed writing practice on current topics
GD10%Mock GDs with feedback
BAT5%Honest, consistent responses
PI20%Form-based preparation, mock interviews

A practical timeline: use the weeks before CAT for mocks, then start WAT-GD-PI preparation as soon as the exam ends, since results usually arrive in January and MDI’s interview window opens in February.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Treating CAT as the whole process. The interview-round block (40%) outweighs it at the final stage.
  • Relying on old data. Weightages changed for 2027-29, so check the year on any table you read.
  • Under-preparing the PI. At 20%, it is the biggest single component after CAT.
  • Inconsistent information. Your form, documents and interview answers must match.
  • Ignoring GD practice. Candidates with strong scores sometimes lose marks by being passive or aggressive in the GD.

6. Can I apply to MDI Gurgaon with a GMAT score?

Conclusion

The MDI Gurgaon admission process 2027–29 rewards well-rounded candidates. CAT 2026 gets you through the door at Stage I, but the final ranking is shaped just as much by WAT, GD, PI and BAT, which together carry 40%. With Stage I now giving more weight to diversity and less to CAT than last year, the smartest approach is to maximise your CAT score and then prepare seriously for the interview rounds from December onward.
