If you dream of becoming a management professor, a researcher or a research-driven industry leader, the IIM Kozhikode Doctoral Programme in Management 2027 intake is one to plan for. IIM Kozhikode (IIMK) offers a funded PhD with eight academic areas, plus two specialised tracks for teachers and senior professionals.
This guide explains the IIMK DPM research areas, eligibility, the three-stage selection process, weightage, fees, the fellowship and how to apply. One important note: as of 28 October 2026, the institute has not published the 2027–28 notification. IIMK has typically opened applications in late November, so we use the official 2026–27 policy as the baseline and label expected changes clearly. Confirm everything on the official IIM Kozhikode doctoral FAQ page.

What Is the IIM Kozhikode DPM?
The DPM is a full-time, research-intensive PhD that trains you in theory development, empirical analysis and research methodology. It prepares scholars for careers in universities, business schools and research institutions. The two other tracks serve different journeys:
- Teaching Track strengthens pedagogy and research for people already in knowledge-oriented roles.
- Practice Track helps senior professionals combine managerial experience with rigorous research to produce evidence-based insights.
IIM Kozhikode DPM Research Areas
All three programmes are offered across eight academic areas. You must pick only one area, and it applies to every programme you choose. The themes below are illustrative examples, not an official topic list. Read each area’s scope on the IIM Kozhikode academic areas page.
| Academic area | Illustrative research themes |
|---|---|
| Decision Sciences & Operations Management (DSOM) | Supply chain analytics, optimisation, operations and service design |
| Economics (ECON) | Development, labour, macroeconomics, applied econometrics |
| Finance, Accounting & Control (FAC) | Asset pricing, corporate finance, reporting, auditing and control |
| Humanities & Liberal Arts in Management (HLAM) | Ethics, culture, communication, management and society |
| Information Systems (IS) | Digital platforms, data-driven decision-making, technology adoption |
| Marketing Management (MM) | Consumer behaviour, branding, pricing, digital marketing |
| Organizational Behaviour & HRM (OBHR) | Leadership, motivation, team dynamics, talent management |
| Strategic Management (SM) | Competitive strategy, corporate governance, innovation, entrepreneurship |
How to choose the right area
- Match your background. Engineers may lean toward DSOM or IS, economists toward ECON or FAC, psychology graduates toward OBHR.
- Check the accepted tests. Each area accepts a specific list of qualifying tests (see below).
- Think in problems, not labels. A clear research question will help your Statement of Purpose and the area interview.
- Read recent faculty work to see whether your interests fit.
IIM Kozhikode DPM Eligibility Criteria
Educational qualifications
An applicant must hold any one of the qualifications below, with the minimum marks shown.
| Degree type | DPM | Teaching Track | Practice Track |
|---|---|---|---|
| Postgraduate degree in any discipline (MA, MCom, ME, MPhil, MSc, MTech, MBA, MCA and similar) | 60% | 60% | 55% |
| Professional qualification (CA / CMA / CS or equivalent) plus a bachelor’s degree | 60% in graduation | 60% in graduation | 50% in graduation |
| 4-year / 8-semester bachelor’s degree in any discipline | 75% | 75% | 60% |
Key rules:
- Final-year students can apply only to the DPM. Provisional admission needs a certificate that you have appeared for all exams. In the 2026–27 cycle, final mark sheets were due by 31 December 2026 or the admission is cancelled and the fellowship paid so far is recovered.
- CA, CMA and CS qualifications must be fully completed at the time of application.
- When both undergraduate and postgraduate marks exist, the higher one is used for the minimum eligibility.
- SC, ST, PwD, NC-OBC and EWS applicants get a 5% relaxation in the minimum marks.
- Qualifications must come from recognised Indian institutions, or an approved equivalent.
Qualifying test scores (DPM only)
DPM applicants need a valid score not older than three years on the application closing date (the IIMB Test is an exception). The accepted tests depend on your area:
- DSOM, ECON, MM, IS: CAT, GATE, GMAT, GRE, IIMB Test, UGC-NET (IS also accepts other recognised tests)
- FAC: CAT, GATE, GMAT, GRE, IIMB Test, UGC-JRF (Management, Economics or Commerce only)
- HLAM: CAT, GATE, GMAT, GRE, IIMB Test, UGC-NET (preferably in fields like English, Law, Psychology or Sociology)
- OBHR and SM: CAT, GMAT, GRE, IIMB Test, UGC-JRF (SM also accepts GATE)
Other points to remember: GRE at-home and online GMAT scores are not accepted. UGC-NET covers all three result categories. If you plan to use the IIMB Test, register directly with IIM Bangalore; in the last cycle, IIMK applicants relying on it had to apply by 23 January because the test was on 1 February. Graduates of two-year PGDM/MBA programmes from IIMs, or the Executive PGDM/MBA from IIM Kozhikode, are exempt from the test with a minimum CGPA of 2.67/4.33 (B-).
Takeaway for CAT aspirants: a CAT score can serve double duty for a DPM application. Our CAT mock tests and previous year papers help you prepare.
Work experience
Experience counts only if it meets the nature and duration rules, measured on a cut-off date (30 November 2025 in the last cycle). Academic work such as teaching assistance or tutoring is not counted for the Practice Track. Keep your experience certificates ready, since original documents are verified. Our guide on work experience documents required by IIMs can help you organise them.
IIM Kozhikode PhD Application Process 2027
The application is online, through the link in the official notification.
- Read the 2027–28 notification when it is published.
- Check eligibility for each programme you want (marks, test, experience).
- Choose one academic area that fits your profile.
- Prepare documents: a recent passport-size photograph, test scorecard (if applicable), mark sheets and degree certificates, category certificate (if applicable) and work or research experience documents.
- Write your Statement of Purpose (SOP) tied to your chosen area, covering research motivation, academic interests and professional goals.
- Fill in the form and indicate up to four preferred centres for Stage 2.
- Pay the non-refundable fee for each programme. A non-reserved applicant applying to all three pays ₹7,000 in total.
- Submit and save the confirmation, then monitor your registered email and the institute website.
Writing a strong SOP
Open with a specific research interest instead of a general love for research. Show what you already know about the area, mention relevant projects or work and explain why a doctorate, and why IIMK, fits your plans. Keep it honest and concise.

IIM Kozhikode DPM Selection Process
Selection follows three stages for all programmes.
Stage 1: Application screening
IIMK checks your education, test score (where required) and work experience. Only applicants who meet all conditions move forward. Meeting the minimum does not guarantee shortlisting.
Stage 2: Doctoral Orientation and Assessment
This stage has two parts, held on the same day at one of six centres: New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bengaluru or Kozhikode.
- Written Ability Test (WAT): a 30-minute, pen-and-paper essay on a general or management-related topic. It is judged on argument clarity, logical structure, insight depth, topic relevance and language coherence.
- Doctoral Orientation Conversation (DOC): a face-to-face interaction with two faculty members. It assesses doctoral motivation, learning curiosity, analytical articulation, perseverance and integrative fit, each scored 1 to 10 for a maximum of 50.
Shortlisting to Stage 3 depends solely on the DOC score, with these cut-offs: General 25, NC-OBC/EWS 22.5 and SC/ST/PwD 20 (out of 50).
Stage 3: Doctoral Area Conversation (DAC)
The DAC is held online with two faculty members from your chosen area. It tests conceptual clarity, analytical reasoning, integrative thinking, research orientation and doctoral readiness, scored out of 50. If you applied to several programmes, you attend only one DAC, but the panel scores you separately for each programme. Make sure your internet, device and surroundings are reliable, because no re-interview is granted for technical disruptions.
IIM Kozhikode DPM Weightage and Final Selection
Final selection uses a Final Composite Score (FCS). Weights differ by programme.
| Component | DPM | Teaching Track | Practice Track |
|---|---|---|---|
| Class X | 15% | 10% | 10% |
| Class XII or Diploma (higher) | 15% | 10% | 10% |
| Graduation or Post-graduation (higher) | 20% | 15% | 10% |
| Quantitative work experience | none | 15% | 20% |
| WAT | 10% | 10% | 10% |
| DAC | 40% | 40% | 40% |
| Total | 100% | 100% | 100% |
What this means: the DAC carries 40% in every programme, so area-level preparation matters most. For the DPM, past academics add up to 50%, so strong marks count. Marks convert into scores through bands: for example, Class X marks of 80% and above earn the full 15 points in the DPM, while below 60% earn zero. For experience-based tracks, work experience is scored in bands and more years do not always mean more marks, since the scoring declines beyond a certain range.
IIM Kozhikode DPM Fees and Fellowship
- DPM: tuition is waived. The fellowship is ₹42,000 per month until you complete the comprehensive qualifying exam, rises to ₹45,000 afterwards and to ₹50,000 after you defend your thesis proposal. IIMK has also announced contingency and conference support of up to ₹5,00,000 per scholar over the programme.
- Teaching Track: ₹5,00,000 for the standard duration.
- Practice Track: ₹9,50,000 in the policy, with a revised ₹12,50,000 under consideration. Verify the latest figure in the new notification.
- Extensions beyond the standard duration need approval and a re-registration fee.
How to Prepare for the IIMK Doctoral Programme
For the qualifying test: choose the test your area accepts, and take it early enough that the score is valid on the closing date. Practise sectional timing and accuracy with our daily practice sets and IIM college predictor to benchmark your CAT percentile.
For the WAT: practise 30-minute essays. Pick a clear position, structure your argument and avoid digressions.
For the DOC: be ready to explain why a doctorate, how you handle long, uncertain work and what you have already read or tried.
For the DAC: revise core ideas and debates in your area and be able to turn an interest into a researchable question.
For documents: keep original certificates, mark sheets and experience letters consistent, since discrepancies can lead to disqualification.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Assuming the 2027 dates are fixed. The 2027–28 schedule is not yet notified.
- Using an expired test score. Scores must not be older than three years on the closing date.
- Relying on an online GMAT or at-home GRE score, which is not accepted.
- Choosing an area without checking its accepted tests.
- A generic SOP that doesn’t match the chosen area.
- Ignoring the DOC cut-off, since it alone decides entry to Stage 3.
- Over-counting experience. Academic roles don’t count for the Practice Track.
- Technical issues during the online DAC, which carry no second chance.
