Understanding CAT
The Common Admission Test is the name of the entrance examination required to get admission in more than 1,000 colleges in India for the postgraduate program in management. It includes the 21 Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs). The Common Admission Test is held once in a year in November, via the online medium. Your ability in VARC (Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension),
DILR (Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning) and QA (Quantitative Ability) is tested. Organizations like IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta, FMS Delhi and many more will call you for the interview if you score “99 percentile” which means you scored above 99 percent of the candidates. Knowing the level of competition is the first thing.

| Section | Questions | MCQs | TITA | Marks | Time | Negative Marking |
| VARC (Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension) | 24 | 22 | 2 | 72 | 40 min | -1 for incorrect MCQs |
| DILR (Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning) | 22 | 12 | 10 | 66 | 40 min | -1 for incorrect MCQs |

Section Wise Strategy: To achieve 99 percentile
1.VARC- Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension( 72 Marks)
The high scorer segment is VARC, accounting for 35.3% weightage. This section comprises of eight questions of verbal ability (Para Jumbles, Para Summary, Odd Sentence Out) and 16 questions of reading comprehension in four chapters. The basic issue with the RC passages in CAT is that these passages are written on topics like philosophy, economics, sociology, physics, and many more to check the comprehension skill of the candidates and not the reading comprehension skills.
For 99 percentile:
• Consistent accuracy across Reading Comprehension and Verbal Ability questions can help candidates secure an 80–85 percentile in the CAT VARC section.
• By finishing all four RC passages within 25–27 minutes, aspirants can reserve 13–15 minutes for VA questions while aiming for 18–20 correct answers from 20–22 attempts
Advice Proven through Testing:
1. Go through different sources of information, such as The Hindu Opinion, Aeon, The Atlantic, and Economist, for about 20 to 30 minutes daily. Be sure to go through materials related to social science, art, and philosophy.
2. While answering RCs, take your time and put yourself in the shoes of the writer. Rereading is a waste of time.
3. Remember that the key to solving Para Jumbles is phrase 1 (starting point), logic, and pronoun use.
4. Try these types of questions because TITA questions (Para Jumbles and Odd One Out) do not have negative markings.
5. Do three to four RCs daily based on the CAT papers between 2018 to 2024.
2.DILR- Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning ( 66 Marks)
Game changer comes into play usually with the DILR section. A mark deduction of up to 4-6 marks may happen within 4-6 questions if you do not understand the data in the set of those questions. 22 DILR questions consisting of 4-5 sets of mixed DI & LR types are there in CAT 2024.
Target for 99th Percentile:
• Smart selection of three manageable sets often proves more rewarding than spending excessive time on a single difficult puzzle.
• Typically, attempting 16–18 questions out of 22 is sufficient to achieve a percentile in the 75–80 range when accuracy remains under control.
Proven Techniques:
6. Your key skill is selecting a set. In the first five minutes, quickly classify all four-five sets into Easy, Medium, or Hard and start with the easy set.
7. Try various types of sets like Binary logic, Bar graph, Line graph, Pie chart, Caselet, Seating arrangement, Blood relation.
8. You need not attempt all questions; by attempting some questions partially, you may get 2 to 3 right answers even if you do not manage to solve the entire set.
9. Practice 2 to 3 DILR sets on a daily basis from previous years’ CAT papers and CAT mock tests.
10. Focus on these LR concepts for sure: Circular arrangement, Game and tournament, Networks.
3.QA- Quantitative Aptitude ( 66 Marks)
For most students, QA requires the largest number of hours. Topics such as Modern Math, Algebra, Geometry, Number Theory, and Arithmetic are assessed in QA. According to reports, in QA, the difficulty level of CAT 2025 was easier than that of CAT 2024; algebra and arithmetic were predominant.
99th percentile goal:
• Strong command over Quantitative Aptitude can place candidates in the 80–85 percentile bracket with approximately 14–16 correct answers.
• Since Arithmetic and Modern Mathematics contribute nearly 55–60% of the section, prioritizing these topics can significantly improve scoring potential.
Proven Techniques:
11. Concept over Speed: Train yourself for speed only after you have enough mental clarity.
12. Know how to approach math questions through shortcut methods like DST (Distance-Speed-Time), Alligation, and Percentages.
13. As there is no negative marking, attempt all TITA questions. Also, intelligent guessing will help a lot.
14. Spend a maximum of 2 and a half minutes per question.

The Final Verdict
Achieving the 99 percentile in the CAT is an objective which is difficult but definitely achievable. From the above data, it can be clearly seen that around 2,900 – 3,000 candidates qualify for this category every year. The only difference between them and those who do not qualify is the planning and strategy that goes behind their preparation over a period of six to twelve months.
Formula to reach 99 Percentile:
1. Preparation in DILR, QA, and VARC on equal terms
2. Completion of more than 30 full-fledged tests and post test analysis
3. Cut-off points for each individual section and not just overall %
4. Reading practice in VARC (at least 30 min daily)
5. Mastery over subjects of high weightage: RC, DILR sets, Algebra and Arithmetic
6. Good exam day approach is attempting fewer but accurate questions.
7. Preparation span of six to twelve months
FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions):
Q1. What is the CAT 2026 exam date and registration schedule?
It is projected that CAT 2026 will take place in November 2026, according to its annual calendar of events. The registration process will begin in August and end in September. Candidates who wish to take admissions in 2026 must look out for the dates at the IIM CAT official website, iimcat.ac.in. It is recommended that the preparation start 6-12 months before the examination.
Q2. What CAT score is required for admission to top IIMs for the 2026 MBA batch?
A candidate aspiring to get admission in the general category would require being in the 99+ percentile for IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, and IIM Calcutta for the 2026 batch of MBA. Although for more recent IIMs, an 80-85 percentile may suffice, IIM Lucknow and IIM Indore may have a requirement of 90+ percentile.
Q3. How many months of preparation are needed to score 99 percentile in CAT 2026?
For getting into the 99th percentile, most CAT scorers and coaching institutions suggest that the time required for preparation is 6-12 months. As a beginner, you need a period of 12 months to learn all concepts and solve practice tests. If you start preparing from January 2026 onwards, you will get sufficient time to dedicate at least 25-35 hours weekly towards learning VARC, DILR, and QA concepts.
Q4. Which is the toughest section in CAT – VARC, DILR, or QA?
Difficulty varies from student to student. DILR is often considered the most unpredictable section, while QA requires strong conceptual clarity and VARC depends on reading comprehension skills. To achieve a 99 percentile in CAT, consistent performance across all three sections is essential, as neglecting any one section can significantly impact the overall score.
